Normally the Library Director or department head will have two evaluation sessions with each full-time employee during the introductory period. These written evaluations will be made during the third month of employment and again at the end of the ninth month of employment. After the introductory year, written evaluation will be conducted annually, prior to July 1.
The Library Director will be evaluated annually by the Board of Trustees, and a written summary of the evaluation will be placed in her/his personnel file.
Evaluation of part-time employees will be made by the department head with input from the Library Director during the third month of the probationary period, and will be continued on an annual basis, much as is done for full-time employees.
All evaluations will take into consideration the following traits:
- Initiative: This refers to a group of job performance characteristics that are referred to by many names—-creativity, originality, ingenuity, motivation, adaptability, willingness—-that describe the way in which an employee assumes the responsibility of his/her position and goes ahead on his/her own without supervision, or who does that “extra thing”, who demonstrates energy, enthusiasm, originality, and imagination in handling his/her duties.
- Technical Competence: This aspect of job performance refers to the quality and the quantity of work produced—-the knowledge of the technical aspects of the work possessed by the employee—-the degree to which he/she is master of his/her job or profession—-his/her understanding of the products processes, and operations of a Library—- his/her ability to plan, organize think logically, and analyze problems, regardless of the level of responsibility.
- Interpersonal Competence: This aspect refers to the employee’s ability to cooperate with and to maintain effective relationships with other employees, with his/her supervisors, with others on the staff, and with the general public.
- Organizational Identification: This aspect of job performance covers those characteristics that describe the way the employee carries out his/her work and conforms to the Library norms. It includes housekeeping and general disciplinary items such as care for the Library equipment, observation of Library rules, attendance, and punctuality.
- Reliability and Stability: This refers to those qualities that describe the employee’s dependability and his/her conscientiousness.
Evaluations are to be kept in a personnel file that is locked. All employees have access to their evaluations and personnel records and may examine them at any reasonable time. As an addendum to all evaluation forms, the employee is given the opportunity to write his/her own comments about any and all written comments.
